Holiday Rentals in Azores - A Guide to Azores

Holiday rentals in the Azores are becoming more popular with holiday makers from Britain as more people discover this fascinating chain of islands in the mid-Atlantic.

There are nine main islands, none of which is very large and so all holiday rentals in the Azores are near the sea, even those described as being in a rural location.  The islands are largely volcanic in origin and their mild even climate has given rise to a profusion of flowering plants making this one of the most colourful regions of Portugal.  Many Azores holiday rentals are set in beautiful gardens and there are also numerous public parks and gardens to enjoy.

Religion is important to the local people and whilst enjoying your Azores holiday rental property you may well find a festival being held in the vicinity.  The most important festival is held on the 5th Sunday after Easter in the capital Ponto Delgada.  A three-hour-long procession follows an image of Christ through the flower-strewn streets of the city.  Other festivals take place throughout the year in other towns and wherever your Azores holiday rental, you will probably be able to watch one.

The islands are actually the tops of some of the highest mountains on the planet and Mt Pico, at 2351 metres is the highest in all Portugal.  Tourism is relatively under developed compared to regions on the mainland such as the Algarve or Lisbon.  A holiday rental in the Azores is really a get-away for those who like something a bit different and enjoy discovering a new way of life and culture

Types of Holiday Rentals in Azores

Several holiday rentals in the Azores are found on large estates or Quintas where properties of differing sizes can be found.

Cottages to rent in the Azores are very popular.  These small but comfortable Azores holiday rentals have often only one bedroom with a convertible settee in the living room.  This type of arrangement is probably suited to couples with small children.

At the other extreme I have seen a large modern house with its own pool and set in its own grounds on the outskirts of a village.  This splendid Azores holiday rental can accommodate up to ten people in considerable luxury.  Activities available nearby include whale watching, swimming, sailing, walking, tennis and cycling.

Azores Useful Information

The Azores are roughly 1500 km from mainland Portugal on the same latitude as Lisbon.  Since 1976 it has been an autonomous region of Portugal.  Most holiday rentals in the Azores are on San Miguel island which is also home to the capital city Ponto Delgada.

The main international airport is here also with regular flights from the mainland and less frequent ones from other European cities including London.  Although the islands are a popular destination for cruise ships, to take up a holiday rental in the Azores you are going to have to fly.

The geography of the islands conveniently divides them into the eastern group (2 islands) the central group (5 islands) and the western group (2 islands) In total the region covers 2355 square kilometers and is actually the most western point of Europe.
