Holiday Rentals in Madeira - A Guide to Madeira

A holiday rental on Madeira island is a dream destination indeed.  This volcanic peak in the Atlantic Ocean is a holiday maker’s paradise, almost as popular in winter as in summer. Bathed by the warm waters of the gulf stream, Madeira’s mild winters make a welcome relief from the harsh weather further north.

In the summer months, the Atlantic Ocean moderates the heat giving an all year round temperate climate.  A holiday rental in Madeira will therefore make an ideal get-away at any time of the year. If you can find a Madeira holiday rental available over the new year period you will be able to experience Funchal’s world famous firework display across the harbour with the cruise ships joining in. Being a small island, beaches and watersports are important attractions, and the mountainous centre makes for some stunning views and interesting walks.

One of the most famous features of Madeira is the Levadas, irrigation channels constructed to transport water from the wet north-west to the dry south-east.  There are over 2000 kilometres of levadas which make excellent paths for walkers and can be enjoyed from many of the Madeira holiday rentals on offer.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Madeira

A large proportion of Madeira holiday rentals are located in the sunnier and drier southern part of the island around the bay of Funchal and the town of Santa Cruz.  Many holiday rentals in Madeira offer south facing terraces with views across the bay or the open ocean.

Even apartments to rent in Madeira have balconies with views.  Few smaller holiday rentals in Madeira seem to have pools but it is possible to find cottages to rent in Madeira which are part of a larger estate and have a pool shared among four or five properties.

Each cottage will most likely have one bedroom and a convertible settee in the living room making them suitable for couples with small children. Larger villas to rent in Madeira, with four or five bedrooms, often do have a pool and a garden making a delightful holiday home for larger groups.

Madeira Useful Information

Since 1976 Madeira, like the Azores, has been an autonomous region of Portugal, with its capital the town of Funchal. Madeira is the largest island of a small archipelago of which only one other, Porto Santo Island, is inhabited.

Holiday rentals in Madeira could be on either island but Madeira Island itself has more diversity and culture.  The local population are welcoming and will share their local traditions with visitors.  Do you fancy hurtling downhill from your Madeira holiday rental on a wooden sledge, the “driver” standing behind you and steering with ropes? Remember, its obligatory to scream! Madeira’s most famous son, at least in modern times, is the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldo memorabilia can be found in many of the local shops.

Although many cruise ships call at Madeira on their way across the Atlantic, for those wanting to spend their vacation in a holiday rental on Madeira, arriving by air is really the only option.  The airport at Funchal has been upgraded and the runway lengthened so now all the modern jets can land there.
