Mafra is a large rural municipality with a coastline on the Costa Estoril, to the north-west of Lisbon. Holiday rentals in Mafra are centred around the old fishing village of Ericeira or near to Mafra town itself.
As in neighbouring Lourinha, many Mafra holiday rentals are taken by surfers drawn to the area by the Atlantic surf, and several surfing competitions are held throughout the year. Ericeira is a popular destination for weekenders from Lisbon but still manages to retain its village charm.

Holiday rentals in Mafra are very varied. There is little in the way of high-rise development and many Mafra holiday rentals are restored old buildings or, if modern, have been built in the traditional style.
There are farmhouses to rent in Mafra, and also their smaller counterpart, cottages to rent in Mafra. The farmhouses, having more space have often had a pool put in but the cottages are less likely to have this benefit. Many offer a sea view but the ocean could be 15 or 20 minutes drive away.
I did discover an intriguing group of four one bedroom apartments to rent in Mafra. Arranged around a shared pool they can be rented individually or all together. For a large group (say four couples) this could be an ideal situation – together, but each with their own space.

Although Ericeira still feels like a fishing village, some new apartments have been built, mostly 2 bedrooms with shared pools.
